I recently had the opportunity to review The American Patriot's Almanac. It is a treasure trove of all kinds of historical facts and trivia, divided into daily readings, one for each day of the year. One of the readings this week tells how several of our presidents have selected a particular scripture to have the Bible open to when they swear on it. The Almanac listed several of them. I really appreciate how meaningful each of these scriptures is for our country!Theodore Roosevelt, 1905:
"But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror." James 1:22-23
Woodrow Wilson, 1917:
"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble..." Psalm 46
Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1933, 1937, 1941, 1945:
"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal..." I Corinthians 13
Gerald Ford, 1974:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6
Jimmy Carter, 1977:
"He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" Micah 6:8
Ronald Reagan, 1981, 1985:
"If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7:14What scripture would you choose if you were president? I'd like to know!

What a great post! I'm going to have to look for that book. The Bible passages are interesting - in some cases it fits the person and the purpose of him. Let me think on the passage I will choose one and I'll stop by a little later to let you know
Great post! I love to read too so this would make a great book for my library collection! I would have to say my verse would be Proverbs 30: 7-9.
Well stop by for some scones and tea later when you need an afternoon break! My ChaCha security detail will keep me busy today so I'll check back in with you all tonight!
That is truly inspiring! What a wonderful book and it is now on my list to find it and read it. Thank you! :) Have a beautiful day!
Yes, the scriptures have and continually inspire and guide!
Thank you for your beautiful thoughts, Karla. Happy Inauguration Day!
But . . . But . . . You didn't tell us what one YOU would choose! Or would you pick one of the ones you already quoted? :-)
